Powertrain Team 2015-2016

I worked with the cross-discipline development and design student engineers throughout the team to ensure the relevant subsystems were designed with appropriate requirements, interfaces and interactions to achieve specific vehicle functions. Our Team had to choose and design parts carefully from bearings, brackets, axes to brakes and rotors.

Insulators for wires on the motor was custom designed to cover the high voltage connections. Two identical insulators were 3D printed and installed on the motor mount as depicted in the exploded view.

The rotor contained significant venting to cool the rotor during performance use. Due to time constraints, we redesigned for easier manufacturing. Thermal Analysis was also performed on the simple design and it proved that the simple design would not perform as well as the vented rotors but would still function well.

The brake rotors were manufactured at the Student Shop in Alumni Hall. Prototypes were made initially before working on the cast iron plates to minimize wasted material and ensure a proper fit on the wheel hubs.
